A growing number of celebs are opening about their ‘sex detox’ or ‘celibacy’ experiences. From A-list stars to sportspersons, several celebrities have taken a break from knocking boots for a little while and even shared their ‘abstinence’ or ‘no sex’ experiences.

For those unaware, ‘sex detox’ is a term used to describe when someone deliberately abstains from sexual activity for an extended time. The reasons for ‘sex detox’ range from focusing on one’s career, self-reflection, emotional healing, self-control, and spiritual upliftment.
No Sex Please!

A few years ago, actor Prateik Smita Patil made headlines when he vowed to practice celibacy for 14 days before the release of his movie, My Friend Pinto. Actor cum UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Orlando Bloom reportedly followed a best friend’s advice and took a six-month hiatus from sex before getting into a ‘serious relationship’ with Katy Perry. Several sportsmen in the past have admitted not “doing it” for weeks and months to stay focused on the game. Many even joked about showing their best ‘performance’ on the field.
Dr. Meenal Patil, a Mumbai-based clinical psychologist says that choosing celibacy can be a powerful tool for self-reflection and emotional growth. “It allows individuals to focus on their personal needs without the emotional ups and downs of sexual relationships. However, it’s important to approach it as a conscious choice rather than as a reaction to past hurt or societal pressure,” says Dr Patil. She adds, “Intentional celibacy can improve self-esteem, emotional discipline, and even the quality of future relationships.”
Sexual Well-being

Gen-Z heartthrob and pop sensation Justin Bieber has spoken candidly about his route of ‘self-imposed celibacy’ that lasted a year before he met his now-wife, Hailey Baldwin. Recently, 50 Cent, renowned rapper and entrepreneur tweeted about practicing abstinence to stay focused on his career. He tweeted: “My new idea is so big; I don’t have time to be distracted. I’m practicing abstinence; I have been meditating and focusing on my goals.” Similarly, actor-cum-model Julia Fox, who briefly dated Kanye West, openly spoke about her choice to embrace celibacy. Fox admitted that sex had often complicated her relationships and that her period of ‘sex detox’ had given her a new sense of empowerment.
Dr Tanaya Narendra, a sex expert says that there isn’t a lot of science to back that abstaining from sex can lead to physical well-being. Dr Tanaya explains, “Mental and emotional well-being is a very personal thing. It depends on the individual. If taking a break helps you, then go for it.”

The Bedroom Pause

From influencers to wellness coaches, social media is flooded with individuals sharing their ‘sex detox’ experiences. In wellness circles, ‘sex detox’ is compared to digital detox – a form of cleansing, reset, and dedication to discipline. “Celibacy isn’t about old-school restrictions anymore; it’s about taking control. Whether it’s for mental clarity, emotional reset, or just focusing on personal goals, today’s generation sees it as a form of self-care, not sacrifice,” says Aarav Mehta, a Wellness Advocate.

Reality TV star Kourtney Kardashian and her husband Travis Barker took part in an Ayurvedic cleansing retreat that included a ‘Sex Fast’—a cleansing process aimed at balancing energy and detoxifying the body. The couple refrained from intimacy for a period. Award-winning actor Andrew Garfield intentionally took a six-month break from sex while preparing for his titular role in Martin Scorsese’s Silence. He essayed the role of a Jesuit priest in the movie. “I had an incredibly spiritual experience. I did a bunch of spiritual practices every day, I created new rituals for myself. I was celibate for six months,” Andrew said on Marc Maron’s podcast. Legendary musician Lenny Kravitz has been vocal about his long-term celibacy. Lenny later stated that he chose to remain celibate until he found a deep, meaningful connection with someone special.

Trend vs Reality

Many stars turn to celibacy or ‘no sex’ period after a difficult breakup of toxic relationships. However, Dr Patil says, “If someone is choosing celibacy to escape intimacy, fear commitment, or suppress natural desires, it can lead to emotional distress. The key is balance —understanding your reasons and ensuring they align
with your overall mental
well-being.”

A 2023 study found that more than 40% of Gen Z adults reported having less sex than previous generations at the same age – they cited reasons like mental health, career priorities, and emotional well-being. Online communities dedicated to “intentional celibacy” are growing rapidly. Dr Tanaya says that there is no harm in abstinence. “But if men don’t ejaculate
voluntarily, their bodies will do it for them in their sleep through nocturnal emissions (nightfall), which is completely normal.’’ What started as a celebrity “sex detox” confession has turned into a full-blown life-style choice. Some-times the answer to better sex is –no sex!
