Windsor customs officials seized eight kilograms of a controlled substance coming in from the United States.

Canadian border officers discovered the stimulant khat, a controlled substance in Canada, in two separate courier shipments at the Ambassador Bridge.

Khat, also referred to as Bushman’s tea, is a flowering evergreen shrub native to eastern and southeastern Africa. It is chewed for its euphoric-like effect.

Canada Border Services Agency officials warn that both inbound and outbound courier shipments are subject to customs examinations.

In January, CBSA agents at the Ambassador Bridge seized 475 kilograms of cocaine from a commercial shipment, part of a bigger investigation involving Toronto police.

Dubbed Project Castillo, officers in Toronto made the largest cocaine bust in the city’s history — seizing 835 kilograms of cocaine worth $83 million.

The Windsor seizure was “a significant contribution” to the major investigation, according to officials.
