Windsor’s downtown farmers’ market named Ontario’s best

The Downtown Windsor Farmers’ Market has claimed its place as the best in Ontario.

Farmers’ Market Ontario presented the 2024 Market of the Year award to Windsor on Wednesday at the Ontario Fruit and Vegetable Convention in Niagara Falls, applauding its impact as a community hub for local food and culture.

“This award belongs to every farmer who wakes up before dawn to bring fresh produce to our city, every vendor who shares their cultural heritage through food, and every resident who chooses to shop local,” said Debi Croucher, executive director of the Downtown Windsor BIA. “This has become a weekly celebration of Windsor’s diversity, entrepreneurial spirit, and commitment to community.”

Alongside the title, the market was also awarded a $1,000 prize from Co-Operators.

Officials attribute the market’s success to its Good For Greens Food Reclamation program, which has gained provincial acclaim for its impact on food security and sustainability.

The initiative has redirected more than 12,000 pounds (5.4 tonnes) of fresh produce, 3,300 baked goods, and 15,000 millilitres of preserves from food waste, turning it into 16,00 meals for vulnerable individuals at six local shelter organizations.

“Our market reflects the very best of Windsor,” market manager Steve Green said. “We’ve welcomed families discovering locally grown produce, newcomers looking for a taste of home at our international food stalls, and vendors launching their first business.

“Our market has created innumerable opportunities for connection and growth, and we’re so proud to say that this connection continues to ripple throughout the community, week after week, season after season.”

More than 60 vendors, including over a dozen local farmers, gather weekly on Pelissier Street between Wyandotte and Park Streets during the warmer months to provide fresh produce, preserves, treats, and other goods to inner-city residents.

The Downtown Windsor Farmers’ Market will open for its 16th season on March 29 and run through Oct. 25.
